What’s the difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator?

If you're planning to improve the look and feel of your home or office, you may have come across the terms "interior designer" and "interior decorator." Although they may sound similar, there are some important differences between the two.
An interior designer creates stylish, functional, comfortable, and beautiful interior spaces that meet building regulations codes. Usually with formal qualifications, we are trained to create functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces using a broad range of skills, including space planning, color theory, and building codes. Interior designers may also work on large-scale projects like commercial spaces or public buildings.
A good understanding of building codes, design styles, and interior architecture is an essential part of an interior designer’s role. We use computer-aided drawing (CAD) programs such as AutoCAD, Sketchup, and Revit (to name a few) to create two and three-dimensional technical plans, elevations and renders. CAD drawings are great for visual presentation of the finished project in realistic 3D before it even begins; taking the guesswork out for clients.
Our work also includes selecting materials, fixtures, fittings, furniture, accessories, and artwork. As you can see, it’s very holistic.
On the other hand, interior decorators are focused on the aesthetics of a space. They can be self self-taught or have completed a course in interior decorating. Work typically involves selecting furniture, accessories, and artwork to enhance the style of an existing space. As with interior designers, decorators work with colour schemes, furniture, and lighting options to create aesthetically appealing spaces. They may advise on furniture layout, flooring and other fixture selection.
The main difference between the two is that interior designers are focused on form and function of a space as well as aesthetics, while interior decorators are primarily focused on the aesthetics. If you're planning a significant renovation or have specific functional needs, an interior designer may be the best choice.
Whether you choose a designer or decorator, it’s really important that they have the following skills:
Communication - the number one imperative for any project. There’s nothing more frustrating than being left in the dark as to a project’s status. Beautiful Spaces Interior Design promises to communicate regularly with you as to your project’s progress.
Problem-solving - designs sometimes uncover problems during the implementation stage which can set the project back in time and budget. Good problem-solving skills will enable solutions to be found. Beautiful Spaces Interior Design operates based on making good decisions the first time to minimise possible issues. Thinking creatively and being flexible is an absolute must when those unexpected building surprises do occur!
Organisational skills - Designers and decorators often have multiple projects being undertaken at the same time. Having clear schedules, checklists and plans mean that everything runs smoothly. Beautiful Spaces Interior Design will not take on more clients than we can provide the best customer service to at any given time. This ensures that you are given the full attention that you deserve.
Attention to detail - absolutely essential as it ensures that every aspect of the design is carefully considered and executed to achieve the desired outcome. Whether it's the placement of furniture, the choice of colors, or the selection of accessories, every detail must be well thought out to create a cohesive and harmonious space. A lack of attention to detail can result in a space that is uncomfortable, impractical, or even unsafe. Beautiful Spaces Interior Design takes pride in taking even the smallest details into account to create a cohesive and visually stunning environment.
Teamwork - Regardless of the project, taking the client on the journey is essential - and that means working as a team! At Beautiful Spaces Interior Design, we will engage you every step of the way, listen to your concerns, and treat you with respect. Our aim is to provide the highest quality customer service, minimising any stress and anxiety that a home renovation or decorating project can bring.
